burma portraits

intro

In 2012 on our 2nd visit to Burma,
we made the journey to the southern
part of the Chin State on the west side
of the country.
It was there we met the Dai-Chin women
with tattooed faces.

The tattoos were done when the child was
between 9 and 15 years old.
Tattooed by a Shaman, the process took
between 24 and 48 hours.

This practise was made illegal in 1963.
